Save the Yellowstone Lake Cutthroat Trout

The Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout population had decreased to less than 10% of historic levels in Yellowstone Lake. This is largely due to predation by nonnative Lake Trout.

Wyoming Trout Unlimited and the East Yellowstone Chapter of TU have focused on recovering the Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout (YCT) population of the upper Yellowstone River and Yellowstone Lake system (YL) since 2008. Our focus is to:

  • Aid/encourage National Park Service efforts to suppress the invasive and predacious lake trout (LT) introduced into that system around 30 years ago.

  • Aid the US Geological Survey in their multi-pronged efforts to locate the LT spawning beds, learn about LT spawning behavior, and develop techniques to suppress LT ova and fry. Recent results are encouraging.
